If you’re expecting a baby, you may be wondering when you should actually start looking for a newborn photographer.
Do you wait until the baby arrives?
Do you need to book months in advance?
And what if you don’t know your baby’s exact birth date yet?
For most families, the second trimester is an ideal time to book your newborn photographer.
Booking early gives you time to choose a photographer whose work and approach you love, reserve space on their calendar, and head into the final months of pregnancy knowing this part of your baby’s story is already taken care of.
I recommend beginning your search during your second trimester.
You don’t necessarily need to book the moment you find a photographer you like, but starting your search early gives you time to learn about the experience and decide what matters most to your family.
This is especially helpful if you’re looking for a photographer who offers something specific—such as an in-home experience, a baby-led approach, or finished artwork rather than simply digital images.
By the time you’re further along in your pregnancy, you’ll ideally already know who you want to work with.
Your baby’s arrival date is an estimate.
Even when you have a scheduled due date, babies don’t always follow the calendar.
That’s why newborn photographers typically reserve your session based on your expected due date, rather than requiring you to know the exact day you’ll give birth.
When you book with me, your due date helps us plan ahead. Once your baby arrives, we’ll connect and determine the best session date based on your family’s schedule and my availability.
You don’t have to know exactly when your baby will be born to reserve your newborn photography experience.
By the second trimester, many parents have started thinking more seriously about what they want their newborn experience to look like.
You’re also early enough in your pregnancy to take your time.
You can look through portfolios.
Read about the photographer’s approach.
Consider the artwork.
Ask questions.
Have a discovery call.
And make a decision without feeling rushed.
By the time the third trimester arrives, you can focus more of your energy on preparing for your baby instead of trying to find a photographer at the last minute.
Don’t assume you’ve missed your opportunity.
It’s still worth reaching out.
Availability varies from photographer to photographer, and some may have room for your due date.
If you’re already well into your pregnancy and haven’t booked newborn photography, reach out as soon as you can.
I’ll let you know whether I have availability for your expected due date and what the next steps look like.
This is another reason it’s helpful to book ahead.
Because your session is planned around your expected due date, we already have a relationship and a plan in place if your baby arrives earlier—or later—than expected.
Once your baby arrives, we’ll communicate and determine the best date for your session.
You don’t have to start the entire booking process while you’re recovering from birth and adjusting to life with a newborn.
The same principle applies.
Your due date isn’t a deadline for your photography session.
It’s simply our starting point for planning.
Newborns don’t always arrive according to schedule, so your session date can be adjusted once your baby is here.
The goal is to make the process flexible enough to accommodate real life.
For the best chance of capturing those classic, sleepy newborn portraits, I recommend scheduling your session within the first 14 days after birth.
During this window, babies are typically sleepier and tend to settle more easily. They also naturally curl into those familiar newborn positions.
It’s a beautiful time to capture just how tiny and new your baby is before those early features and movements begin to change.
Because babies don’t arrive on a predictable schedule, your due date is reserved—not a specific session date. Your retainer secures your place on my calendar around your expected due date, giving us flexibility to schedule your actual session once your baby arrives.
Once your baby is here, we’ll connect and choose a session date that works for your family and gets us as close to the 7–14 day window as possible.
If your baby arrives early, comes later than expected, or your family needs additional time, don’t worry. We’ll adjust accordingly.
For families in Mansfield, Midlothian, and throughout the surrounding South Dallas area, one of the biggest advantages of an in-home session is simply the convenience.
You don’t have to plan around getting everyone out the door.
You don’t have to pack everything your newborn might need.
And you don’t have to worry about getting to a studio on time with a baby whose schedule changes by the hour.
I bring the professional, studio-style setup to your home and create the portraits there.
You get to stay where you’re most comfortable.
Booking early is important, but choosing the right photographer matters more than simply booking someone who has an opening.
Consider:
Make sure your photographer prioritizes your baby’s safety and understands how to work with newborns appropriately.
Look for work you genuinely love. Your photographer’s portfolio will give you a good sense of what your finished portraits may look like.
Newborn photography requires more than knowing how to use a camera. Look for someone who has experience working with newborns and understands how to create a calm, supportive session.
Ask what happens beyond the photography itself.
Is there session planning?
Wardrobe guidance?
Professional styling?
Artwork?
An album?
Design assistance?
Delivery?
Understanding the entire experience can help you compare photographers more meaningfully than looking at session fees alone.
The best photographer isn’t necessarily the one with the closest location or the lowest price.
It’s the photographer whose approach makes you feel comfortable and whose experience aligns with what you want for your family.
My process is designed to keep things simple.
Start by reaching out with your due date and a little information about your family.
We’ll have a short discovery call so I can learn more about what you’re looking for and answer your questions.
I’ll send you my experience and investment information so you can decide whether we’re the right fit.
If you decide to move forward, your non-refundable retainer reserves your place on my calendar.
From there, we’ll stay connected as your due date approaches and adjust the session date once your baby arrives.
If you’re currently in your second trimester and know you want newborn photographs, now is a great time to start looking.
You don’t need to know exactly when your baby will arrive.
You don’t need to have every detail figured out.
And you don’t need to wait until the final weeks of pregnancy.
Starting early gives you the opportunity to choose intentionally rather than simply choosing whoever happens to have an opening.
Your baby’s first days will pass quickly.
The photographs you’ll have from this season will last much longer.
If you’re expecting and looking for an in-home newborn photography experience in the South Dallas area, I’d love to help you plan yours.
I bring the professional studio-style experience to your home, work at your baby’s pace, and guide you through the process from planning your session to creating finished artwork for your family.
If you’re in your second trimester, this is a great time to begin.
